The short answer

Strong Rista alternatives include Petpooja (broad features and integrations), Restroworks (large chains), UrbanPiper Prime (delivery-first), Gofrugal (ERP depth) and Ecomeal (independent restaurants and small chains that want AI-written daily deals at ₹333/month + GST billed yearly). Score each one on the six-part rubric below during the demo, not after.

Most "alternatives" articles list ten names and leave you exactly where you started. This one gives you a scorecard you can print, take to every demo and fill in while the salesperson is still talking. Then we score a few alternatives against it using only public information.

The six-part POS scorecard

Rate each part from 0 to 2 during the demo: 0 = not shown or not available, 1 = available with caveats, 2 = shown live and works for you.

# Area What "2" looks like
1 Workflows Your actual order flow (dine-in, takeaway, delivery) demonstrated end to end, with modifiers, splits and holds
2 Hardware Runs on devices you own or can buy easily; printers tested; clear answer on offline mode
3 Integrations The integrations you need (aggregators, payments, accounting) shown working, with costs stated
4 Stock management Ingredient-level stock, recipes, wastage and variance, or an honest "not yet"
5 Reporting and insight Day-end close and weekly view you understand in under a minute; bonus for recommendations
6 Support Named channels, hours and response times in writing

Then add one more line that isn't scored: total yearly cost, in rupees, including GST, add-ons and hardware.

How to read the scorecard

Score 10 or more: serious contender. 7 to 9: depends on what's missing. Below 7: thank them for their time and the free tea.

Why people look for Rista alternatives

Rista is a capable POS. Its product page covers multi-brand invoicing, channel-level menus, branch-level stock with wastage and theft records, CRM, reservations and two-way aggregator integrations (Rista by DotPe). Owners typically look elsewhere because:

  • They want published pricing before a demo.
  • They're a single outlet and find multi-brand features more than they need.
  • They want a different support experience.
  • They want AI recommendations, not just reports.

Rista alternatives scored on public information

We can only score what vendors show publicly, so treat these as starting points for your own demo scores.

A closer look at each alternative

Petpooja

The broad all-rounder: cloud billing, 80+ reports, in-built CRM, unlimited terminals, inventory and a long list of integrations. Strong when you need lots of modules. Ask for the full yearly cost with add-ons. Read our Petpooja vs Ecomeal comparison.

Restroworks (formerly Posist)

For large and multi-country chains that want central menus and reporting. Probably more than a single outlet needs.

UrbanPiper Prime

For brands where delivery apps drive most orders. Its roots are in aggregator middleware, and dine-in features are described as lighter.

Gofrugal

For owners who think like distributors: purchase orders, production planning, recipes and GST accounting. Billing and aggregator features are described as less specialised.

Ecomeal

For independent restaurants, cafés and small chains. Ecomeal's strength is turning sales data into action: AI Up Sell finds dishes that haven't sold well over the last seven days, writes a deal for each with the reason, and puts it on the POS every afternoon until 10 pm. It also has a synced POS and QR menu, customer segments and a multi-outlet group view. It doesn't integrate delivery apps or track ingredient-level stock yet, so score it honestly on areas 3 and 4.

How to run a fair evaluation

  1. Use the same scorecard for every vendor. Print it.
  2. Bring your real menu and ask them to bill your three most complicated orders.
  3. Ask for the written yearly quote before the second meeting.
  4. Call their support line once before you sign, at a busy time.
  5. Talk to one existing customer of each shortlisted vendor, ideally your format and city.

A worked scorecard example

Here's how one fictional owner, running two casual dine-in restaurants with a small takeaway counter, might score three options after demos. Illustrative only; your scores will differ.

Area Option A Option B Option C
Workflows 2 2 1
Hardware 2 1 2
Integrations 2 1 0
Stock management 2 2 0
Reporting and insight 1 1 2
Support 1 2 2
Total 10 9 7
Yearly cost ₹₹₹ ₹₹ ₹

Option A scores highest but costs most. Option C scores lowest but is cheapest and strongest on insight. The owner's decision depends on what matters most: if aggregator orders are small and stock is managed in a spreadsheet for now, Option C might be the right call, with a plan to revisit in a year.

This is the point of the scorecard: it doesn't make the decision for you, it makes the trade-off visible.

Support: how to test it before you sign

  1. Call or message their support line at 8 pm on a Friday with a real question.
  2. Time the response.
  3. Judge the answer: did they solve it, or send you a link?
  4. Ask a current customer (ask the vendor for a reference in your format).
  5. Get support hours and channels in your contract.

Hardware: avoid buying twice

Before you buy any hardware:

  • Ask which billing devices are supported: Android tablet, iPad, Windows PC, browser.
  • Ask which thermal printers are tested.
  • Ask whether KOT printers and bill printers can be different models.
  • Ask what happens if a device fails mid-service.

Browser-based systems like Ecomeal can often run on hardware you already have. Confirm printer compatibility in the demo.
