Petpooja Alternatives in India: How to Choose the Right POS

Thinking of leaving Petpooja? Good alternatives exist, but the right one depends on what kind of restaurant you run. And switching has a cost nobody quotes.

The short answer

The best Petpooja alternative depends on your format. Cafés and casual dine-in: Ecomeal or DineOpen. QSRs: Rista by DotPe or Ecomeal. Cloud kitchens: Rista or UrbanPiper Prime. Large chains: Restroworks. ERP-minded owners: Gofrugal. Before switching, list exactly what's not working with Petpooja, because a new POS fixes problems, not moods.

Petpooja is one of the most widely used restaurant POS systems in India, and it does a lot well. People look for alternatives for a handful of reasons: price once add-ons stack up, wanting something simpler, wanting a different support experience, or wanting features Petpooja doesn't focus on. Figure out which one is yours before you book demos.

Step 1: Name your reason for leaving

Your reason What to look for
"The total cost got high" Published, all-inclusive pricing; fewer paid add-ons
"It's too complicated for my staff" Short learning curve, clean billing screen
"I need more help selling, not more reports" AI recommendations, automatic upsells
"I need better inventory" Recipe-level stock, variance and wastage tracking
"I'm scaling to many outlets" Central menu control, outlet comparisons
"Support isn't fast enough" Clear support channels and hours, in writing

If your answer is "I need Swiggy and Zomato orders inside my POS," most serious alternatives offer that, but not all. Ecomeal doesn't yet.

Step 2: Pick by restaurant type

Cafés

Best alternatives: Ecomeal, DineOpen. Cafés need fast counter billing, modifiers ("oat milk, less sugar, extra shot"), takeaway, a QR menu and simple loyalty. Ecomeal covers billing, a POS and QR menu that stay in sync, loyalty tiers, and AI Up Sell, which suggests daily combos for slow items (handy when the banana bread isn't moving). Published price: ₹333/month + GST billed yearly. DineOpen publishes ₹899/month on its Growth plan (DineOpen). See our café billing checklist.

QSRs

Best alternatives: Rista by DotPe, Ecomeal. QSRs live on speed, combos and kitchen routing. Rista emphasises smart billing and queue management for quick service (Rista by DotPe). Ecomeal's suggested combos and AI deals help raise average bill value at the counter. See our QSR POS guide.

Cloud kitchens

Best alternatives: Rista by DotPe, UrbanPiper Prime. When aggregators are your business, integration depth comes first. Rista lists two-way aggregator integration; UrbanPiper grew out of aggregator middleware and is strongest at managing delivery channels (Petpooja blog). Ecomeal isn't the right pick for delivery-first kitchens until our aggregator integration is live. See our cloud kitchen POS guide.

Casual and fine dine-in

Best alternatives: Ecomeal, Rista, eZee Optimus (for hotel restaurants). Dine-in needs table management, KOT tracking, split bills and guest history. Ecomeal tracks every order from Created to Paid and shows repeat rate and VIP or at-risk guests. Rista adds reservations and queue management.

Multi-outlet chains

Best alternatives: Restroworks, Rista; Ecomeal for small chains. Restroworks (formerly Posist) is built for large chains with central control. For owner-run chains of two to ten outlets, Ecomeal's group view shows revenue, orders and open/close history for each outlet, with a one-tap outlet switcher. See our multi-outlet guide.

Step 3: Understand the real switching cost

Nobody quotes this, so here it is.

Switching cost How to reduce it
Menu set-up Export your menu to Excel first; ask the new vendor to import it
Customer data Export customers and loyalty points before you cancel
Sales history Export at least 12 months of item-wise sales for comparison
Staff retraining Choose a simpler system; run both for 2-3 days
Hardware Check your printers and tablets work with the new POS
Contract overlap Check notice periods and prepaid months
Integrations Re-connect payments, aggregators and accounting

Before you cancel anything

Export everything you can: menu, customers, item-wise sales, and tax reports. Check your contract for notice periods. Your data is yours, but you have to download it while you still have the login.

Step 4: Migrate without chaos

  1. Pick a quiet day. Monday lunch, not Saturday dinner.
  2. Import the menu and check every price. Especially GST settings.
  3. Train one cashier first, and let them train the rest.
  4. Run old and new side by side for two or three services.
  5. Compare day-end totals between both systems.
  6. Switch fully once the numbers match.

What to keep, what to rebuild

Not everything is worth migrating:

  • Keep: menu structure, prices, tax settings, customer list, loyalty balances, at least 12 months of item-wise sales.
  • Rebuild: modifier groups (an opportunity to clean them up), discount rules (an opportunity to tighten them), user roles.
  • Leave behind: old items you haven't sold in six months, test customers, duplicate categories.

The migration bonus

Every POS migration uncovers at least one menu item that nobody has ordered since 2021 but which still has a price, a photo and its own category. Let it go. It's had a good run.

Questions to ask yourself before switching

  1. What exactly isn't working today? Write it down.
  2. Will the new system fix that specific thing? Ask to see it.
  3. What will I lose (integrations, features, staff familiarity)?
  4. What's the total first-year cost, including the switch?
  5. Who on my team will own the change?

If the answers are clear, switch. If they're fuzzy, fix the process first; a new POS won't fix a broken habit.
