The short answer
Telangana restaurants, especially in Hyderabad, should choose POS software based on format: biryani houses need parcel speed, family packs and weekend capacity; Irani cafés need ultra-fast small-ticket billing; cloud kitchens and QSRs in HITEC City and Gachibowli need aggregator integration and peak-hour performance; and every format needs to handle seasonal menus like Ramzan haleem cleanly. Check support hours against your late-night service.
Hyderabad in numbers
NRAI's India Food Services Report 2024 puts Hyderabad's organised food services market at about ₹10,161 crore, ranked sixth among the top 21 cities, with 74,807 outlets across the organised and unorganised segments. It also found that fine dining and casual dining together are the preferred choice for more than half of families eating out (MediaBrief).
That's a lot of restaurants competing for the same evening, which makes the small advantages (faster billing, better upselling, fewer leaks) matter more.
Telangana's restaurant formats
Biryani houses
Biryani in Hyderabad is both a dish and an identity. Biryani restaurants handle large parcel volumes, family and jumbo packs, and serious weekend and holiday surges.
What the POS must do: bill family packs and add-ons (extra raita, mirchi ka salan, double ka meetha) in seconds, separate dine-in and parcel, and show weekend peaks clearly. Ecomeal shows dine-in vs takeaway revenue, your peak hour and most-ordered times, and suggests combos inside the bill.
The biryani question
Every Hyderabadi has a firm opinion on which biryani is best. We have no opinion. We just think whichever one you serve should be billed in under ten seconds.
Irani cafés
Irani chai with Osmania biscuits is a Hyderabad ritual. Irani cafés run on tiny tickets and constant turnover. Counter speed and a clean cash-and-UPI day-end matter more than anything else.
Haleem season and seasonal menus
During Ramzan, haleem becomes a headline item at many Hyderabad restaurants, often with dedicated counters, pre-orders and extended evening hours. Then it disappears for another year.
What the POS must do: add a seasonal item and counter quickly, report its sales separately, and switch it off cleanly after the season. In Ecomeal, you can add items to the menu and switch them on or off across the POS and QR menu in one tap. The sales history stays, so next year you can plan from it.
Cloud kitchens and QSRs in the IT corridor
HITEC City, Gachibowli, Madhapur and the Financial District have dense office populations, weekday lunch peaks and heavy delivery. Cloud kitchens here need strong aggregator integration first. Read our cloud kitchen POS guide. Ecomeal's Swiggy and Zomato integration isn't live yet, so delivery-first kitchens should weigh that.
For counter QSRs in the same areas, speed and combos matter most. See our QSR POS guide.
Family and fine dining
With more than half of families preferring fine and casual dining for eating out, table service, KOT tracking and guest recognition matter. Ecomeal tracks orders from Created to Served and Paid, and its customer screen shows repeat rate, average spend, loyalty tiers and VIP or at-risk guests.
Staff and language
Hyderabad restaurant teams commonly work across Telugu, Hindi, Urdu and English, with many staff from other states. Clear icons, filters and short item names help. Ecomeal includes veg, egg and non-veg filters, "Best" and "AI Deal" tags, and a language switch; ask in a demo which languages are available.
Late-night service and support
Many Hyderabad restaurants serve late. Support that ends at 7 pm is not support. Ask every vendor, in writing, who answers between 9 pm and midnight, and how. Ecomeal support is in-app, on WhatsApp and at support@ecomeal.in.
What to compare
| Format | Must-have | Ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Biryani house | Parcel speed, family packs, add-ons | Bill a family pack with 3 add-ons |
| Irani café | Small-ticket speed, cash/UPI close | 10 bills back to back |
| Seasonal (haleem) | Add/remove items, separate report | Add an item and a counter live |
| Cloud kitchen | Aggregator integration | Live aggregator order to KOT |
| QSR | Combos, tokens, peak speed | Peak-hour stress test |
| Family dining | KOT tracking, guest history | Split bill, transfer table |
GST basics
Restaurant GST is national: most standalone restaurants charge 5% without input tax credit, restaurants in hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500 charge 18% with ITC, and aggregators pay GST on food ordered through them under Section 9(5) (TAXAJ). Service charge must be voluntary.
