The short answer
Karnataka's restaurants range from high-speed darshinis to café-and-coworking hybrids to multi-cuisine family restaurants. Choose a POS that matches your format first: counter speed and tokens for darshinis and QSRs, modifiers, QR menus and loyalty for cafés, table and KOT tracking for dine-in, and aggregator integration if delivery is big. Then check support in your hours and staff comfort with the interface. Ecomeal is built in Bengaluru, at ₹333/month + GST billed yearly.
We build Ecomeal in Bengaluru, so this one's personal. This guide focuses on what's genuinely different about running a restaurant in Karnataka, rather than a national guide with the state name swapped in.
Karnataka's restaurant formats, and what each needs
Darshinis and self-service tiffin rooms
The darshini model, pay at the counter, collect at the counter, eat standing, is a Bengaluru institution. It's also one of the fastest service formats anywhere: a short menu, huge volume and morning peaks.
What the POS must do: bill in seconds, issue tokens or coupons, handle cash and UPI equally fast, and summarise the morning rush separately from the rest of the day. Ecomeal's dashboard splits revenue by morning, afternoon and evening and shows your peak hour, which is exactly what a tiffin room owner looks at.
Darshini time
In a Bengaluru darshini, a guest goes from "one idli-vada" to "paid, collected, eaten, gone" faster than most POS systems take to load the payment screen. Test accordingly.
Cafés and coffee-forward spots
Bengaluru has a deep café culture, from filter-coffee institutions to specialty roasters. Cafés need modifiers, a QR menu that matches the POS, loyalty for regulars and help selling food alongside coffee. See our café billing checklist.
Tech-park and office-area lunch counters
Areas around Whitefield, Outer Ring Road, Electronic City and Manyata see intense weekday lunch peaks and quiet weekends. The POS should make weekday vs weekend patterns obvious, and help sell during the empty hours. Ecomeal's AI Up Sell writes deals for slow-moving dishes every afternoon, which is useful for turning a dead 4 pm into tea-and-snack combos.
Family and multi-cuisine restaurants
Larger menus (South Indian, North Indian and Chinese on the same card), table service and split bills. Order tracking from KOT to served matters most. Ecomeal tracks every order through Created, KOT sent, Preparing, Ready, Served and Paid.
Cloud kitchens
Bengaluru is one of India's busiest delivery markets. If delivery is most of your business, aggregator integration comes first; see our cloud kitchen POS guide. Ecomeal's Swiggy and Zomato integration isn't live yet.
Staff and language
Restaurant teams in Karnataka often mix Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English, with many staff from other states. A POS that relies heavily on reading long English labels slows new staff down. Look for:
- Clear icons and filters: Ecomeal uses veg, egg and non-veg filters and tags like "Best" and "AI Deal" on items
- Short item names you control
- A language switch: Ecomeal includes one; ask in a demo which languages are available for your team
GST and compliance in Karnataka
GST rules for restaurants are national. Most standalone restaurants charge 5% GST without input tax credit; restaurants in hotels with room tariffs above ₹7,500 charge 18% with ITC; Swiggy and Zomato pay the GST on food ordered through them under Section 9(5) (TAXAJ). Service charge can't be added by default under CCPA guidelines upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2025. Your POS should make all of this a setting, not a calculation.
Support: what "local" should mean
For a Bengaluru restaurant, "local support" means answers during your service hours and someone who understands a darshini isn't a fine-dine. Ask:
- What are support hours, and through which channel?
- Is onboarding remote or on-site?
- How quickly do you respond during dinner service?
Ecomeal's team is based in Bengaluru. Support is in-app ("Support, one tap away"), on WhatsApp and at support@ecomeal.in.
